Instructors - Dean Wiseman

Dean started training at Shi-Sei-Kan with Sensei Pat McGregor in 1985, as he thought this would be a good cross training for his main sport; Rugby League. However, karate soon became addictive for Dean and rugby League became a game he used to play!

In 1987 Dean participated in the first "International Goju Kai Tournament" held in Singapore. The team then traveled onto Japan for further training at Ritsumeikan and Kansai Universities, plus several different dojos in the evenings. This was a demanding, but very rewarding time for Dean.

In 1993 Dean returned back to Japan to compete and train for a further 3 months, this time with H.Horiuchi Sensei (6th Dan). On his return to New Zealand he was back training with Sensei Pat McGregor, and Dieter Steinegg.

Dean's next trip to Japan was in 1998, to both compete in "The All Japan Goju Kai Championships" held in Okinawa, and for further training.

Dean spent the following 7 years in London, which is a must for any serious tournament kumite competition. In England you can enter a different tournament every weekend, and the standard is very high.

In London Dean trained with Sensei Terry Daly (6th Dan) Uechi Ryu. There were many current and former International fighters that would come to this club, an indication to the high standard Sensei Terry set.

Dean also trained with Shihan Leo Lipinski (7 Dan) and Paul Coleman (6th Dan) Goju Kai. Dean really enjoyed the no nonsense, direct approach to training, and the very high emphases on dojo sparring.

Dean is now back home in Christchurch, training with Sensei Pat McGregor where it all started for him. Dean says, "It is thanks to Sensei Pat's incredibly high standards and his insistence that all his students give their very best; it is no surprise that his dojo is held in such high regard internationally". Dean feels so fortunate to be able to share his experiences and contribute all that he can to the mana of Shi-Sei-Kan.
